General Information
The Record model is GB’s only attempt to make a cast alloy stem, all their other alloy stems being forged. It is perhaps a rather half-hearted attempt since it was only offered in one size and only appears in one version of one 1960s brochure. Cast stems had a poor reputation for sudden catastrophic failure and, although a company of GB’s standing probably had good quality controls in place to minimise this risk, they also probably suffered from the generic mistrust of cast stems that other company’s products had created. Casting was a cheaper process and this is reflected in the retail prices. The equivalent size in GB’s traditional spearpoint forged stem cost 13% more and the equivalent in the new Metric range was a whopping 44% more.
