General Information
(Description courtesy of eBay auction by Scott of bicyclist_retreat)

This offering is for one set of new-old-stock Suntour Sprint shifters (Model LD-4850). These are probably the nicest friction-based shifters we have available. Their vintage is mid to late 80's, which pre-dates index shifting, and they are very close to Suntour's top-of-the-line (with only the Suntour Superbe Pro product line considered to be superior at the time). They are not finished (polished) as nice as the Superbe Pro equivalent shifters, but the all alloy levers still show very well, as would be expected of any high-end down tube shifter set.

Please also note that while these shifters are a friction-only model, they do incorporate Suntour's ratcheting design, so the shifters make a series of small "clicks" as the levers are pulled through the gears. Functionally, I do not believe there is a significant benefit to this design over silent friction shifters, but Suntour appears to have reserved this design for some of their better quality down tube shifters and we do get a fair number of folks asking about this design feature (so we thought it was worth mentioning herein).

Details:

Suntour introduced the Sprint gruppo, price between Superbe Pro and Cyclone, to compete with Shimano 600 Ultegra. Suntour Sprint was splendid value, everything looked expensive and the finish was superbe.

SunTour (Maeda)

SunTour derailleurs have a two-letter date code. On rear derailleurs the code is stamped on the back side of the inner parallel arm. On front derailleurs it is stamped on the back side of the inner cage.

The first letter represents the year. Larry Osborn and I believe O (Oh) is 1972, V is 1979 and A is 1984. As with Shimano, the second letter is the month code, where A is January and L is December.

The earliest Suntour derailleur I have found with a code is marked OF. A rear derailleur marked OD (corresponding to April of 72) was reported by Leighton Walter. I have a bike that dates from between 1970 to 1972 that has the original SunTour derailleurs. These derailleurs do not have date codes on them, so I believe the coding started sometime between 1970 and April of 1972.
