Salsa Cycles was started by Ross Shafer in Santa Cruz CA in 1982 (after building for friends under the name Red Bush and Santana since 1976) He started with frames and stems and quickly grew in popularity

Ross Shafer bought a frame kit in 1976 and began building under the name Red Bush
Ross goes to England in 1978 to learn that he bikes will probably not sell there. He works in a shop for a month
Ross starts at Santana bikes in 1979 and builds there for a year
1981: Ross builds a 650B lugged MTB. All his friends want one
Throughout 1982 everyone wants one of Ross' bikes. He changes the name to Salsa
Ross sees Scott Nicol at Ibis in Petaluma CA in 1983 and decides to move up there. He starts building stems to go with his bikes
1984: Salsa Alacarte frames begin production
Ross starts making handlebars in 1988
Ross in inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 1991
1992: Flip Off quick releases introduced
Ross sells the Salsa name to QBP (Quality Bicycle Products, a wholesaler of bike parts and frames) in 1997
