General Information
Sturmey Archer Three Speed hubs such as the "AW"  are controlled using an Indicator Chain which enters the hollow hub axle through an Indicator Nut.  The "window" hole in the side of indicator nut allows the end of the indicator chain rod to be seen for purposes of adjustment.  The term "indicator" is used because setting the cable tension such that the end of the rod is flush with the end of the axle "indicates" that the gears are properly adjusted.  Is this the earliest example of  "index" shifting, I wonder?

Brand Information(click to expand)
Best known for the internal geared (planetary gearing) hub, Sturmey Archer is another one of the most recognized brands in cycling.  The company has been bought and sold several times since it's origins, and at some time was owned by the same parent company as both Brooks and Raleigh.  The company is still in business (well, the name is still in use anyways), and there are still internal geared hubs produced today with the Sturmey Archer name.
