Details:   The Shimano 600EX groupset was made in a multitude of variations and generations.  Often, more than one variation was being produced at the same time.  Included in the Shimano 600EX groupsets is the easily recognizable Arabesque group with detailed engravings and designs.  The 600EX group went from friction shifting at its introduction, to 6 speed SIS shifting later in the 1980's.

Added a few pics for a slight variant of this mech. Mine has a slightly different design of the rear cage, as well as some other tweaks here and there. Mine might well be the first generation (1978) of this model, seeing as Shimano's VIA marking (as can be seen on the example pictured alongside mine) doesn't show on my mech, and I believe this practice was introduced in the 80s. Date code is FF.

Previous comment update: FF date code is June 1981, so differences are most likely minor design changes over the original, but the aforementioned unit would not strictly be considered a 1st generation model if changes were made.
